2 Nigerians Selected for UNOPS Global Innovation Challenge


Last year the UNOPS GIC selected 2 Nigerians for the Global Innovation Challenge. They received more than 6 hundred applications from all over the world and from the finalised selection process two Nigerians was selected and a total of 25 Startups was selected.

UNOPS Global Innovation Challenge brings together innovators, entrepreneurs, programmers and developers to provide the creative ideas and solutions needed to accelerate progress on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The two Nigerians startups selected for the UNOPS Global Innovation Challenge 2020 are:

  • Jennings Creations – Afrimart
  • Scrapays Technologies Ltd


About Afrimart

Afrimart is an e-commerce platform focused on providing seamless services with the highest level of customer satisfaction-With a variety of products like; African Antiques, Crafts, Traditional Music Instrument, Artifacts, Traditional Wears, Traditional Games and Agro-Allied products. This is a new business initiative, the very first of its type for this category of African heritage products. Our business model is to distribute and export these products mainly to earn foreign exchange into the economy.

Our vision at Afrimart is to boost the sales of local craftsmen and rural women farmers by buying directly from them as well as distributing and exporting to the target market. This will create direct and indirect jobs along the production chain, earn foreign exchange, stimulate Agricultural production and also provide a stable revenue for local craftsmen and rural women farmers.

We plan to use an e-wallet system built on blockchain technology for transactions with our target market as well as with the local craftsmen and rural women farmers. Our aim is to use the blockchain technology to curb the challenges of online payment encountered by most e-Commerce platform and export industry in Africa. As a social impact we also have a plan to train these local craftsmen and farmers on the use of ICT with focus on data gathering and blockchain for efficient production and target marketing.  

In addition, concerning exportation of these items we have already partnered with companies in Namibia and the United States.

With the right support we look forward to setting up physical branches in Gambia, Mauritius and Estonia.

The Founder

Olajide Ojeniyi is a dynamic individual with a passion for research and innovation. He has a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from the Lagos State University. He has attended extensive leadership and management courses from British Council, Pan-African University, GE Garage, Daystar Leadership Academy and Centre for Enterprise Development and Action Research. On the short term he is gaining hands-on experience in business by collaborating with others to tackle socio-economic problems in Africa. As a recognition of his proven record of civic engagement, business and youth leadership, in the year 2015 he was inducted as a Youth Governance Ambassador by TIE Nigeria; a Youth advocacy group supported by Carrington Youth Fellowship Initiative and the United States Consulate. In addition he was one of the few youths selected to partake in a Youth Enterprise survey programme organized by the World Bank in the year 2013, 2014, 2016 and 2019. He recently won the Business Excellence Award in 2019, organized by the World Confederation of Businesses, USA. Also he was selected as a National Nominee by the World Summit Awards supported by the United Nations.


About Scrapays Technologies Ltd 

Scrapays is a fusion of Recycling, Technology and finance.

Scrapays use technology to facilitate the recovery of recyclable waste in developing nations.
Scrapays employs a decentralized collected model, that allows individuals/businesses get reward in direct cash or commodity for giving off sorted waste host collection outlets and/or become independent collectors through our technology enabled solutions (USSD, Mobile and Web App)

The USSD or Mobile App, allows the waste producers connect the closet collector, by initiating a pickup request.

The Founder’s

Scrapays is run by a bunch of passionate and committed guys who are focused on driving impactful change leveraging technology and data.

The Co-Founder is Boluwatife Moses. To him Entrepreneurship  is a Journey, a mission to create apt tech enabled solutions and creating value is a personal mission.

He grew up in an environment were people barely have access to 2 hours of electricity during his formative and teenage years, can be typified as living in mini- hell. During this period the load of assignments he had to battle with from school, starting from evening late into the night are usually a mountainous challenge because of lack of good illumination in the absence of light.

This struggle let him to building his first Bamboo touch light that uses reflective materials in Cigarette to enhance it coverage surface area.
This simple product went viral in accord with its own magnitude, in fact he presented and sold it in a local technical workshop for secondary schools.

During his undergraduate days, he and a team of two happened to be one of the just five teams that was selected in Nigeria and 72 worldwide for the Shellideas360 competition. In this competition he and his worked on the generation of viable eco-friendly electricity from marshy plants.
